It starts today

For the last two years, doing something that defines us and enhances our profession has been the object of many discussions among friends…while having a few drinks we have to say. This kind of project is always reserved for later while we deal with more urgent matters. It was relegated to the list of shoulds - you probably have a copy at home.

In brief, after the November 2009 Congrès des milieux documentaires du Québec/Conference of the Library and Information Community of Québec, something major hit us. Can you guess what it was ? Yep. Our training and profession is still unknown even amongst library and information professionals.

Let’s admit it. Even we have difficulties defining ourselves. If we exclude the information found on Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec’s web site, we don’t have much information on our situation. What tasks do we perform ? What are our responsibilities ? In what type of workplace are we found ? What will be the future of our profession ? Such questions as these are pertinent. They gave us the idea of a survey to define the issues that affect us.

So here we are, first day and a half of the adventure. We have an outline for the survey which is a start. Anxiously, we have also filled in the form for the 2010 Congrès des milieux documentaires du Québec/Conference of the Library and Information Community of Quebec. We now have to go forward and complete the project so we can present the results to the consultation we are going to propose to you. This blog will allow you to follow our adventures.

To make this a success we will need you of course ! You are nothing less than  important, a must, and vital ! We are impatiently awaiting your comments and suggestions. This project will not have the achievement we hope for without your enthusiastic participation!

The posts we will publish will also be a way for you to see how things are going on behind the scenes when one has to prepare a communication for a congress. In the hopes that will make you want to prepare a project of your own for the enrichment of the profession…

Welcome aboard,

André et Marjolaine
